Using BOTOX Treatments to Alleviate Migraines

Posted by Migraine Relief Center on Dec 17, 2013 7:00:00 AM

BOTOX has been used for years to reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging, but it has recently been approved for use as a migraine treatment. Scientists are not sure exactly why migraines occur, but they have found that BOTOX injections can minimize the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. If you suffer from migraines, here is what you need to know about BOTOX and how it may be able to help you.

How Does BOTOX Help Migraines?

While researchers are still determining how BOTOX alleviates migraine symptoms, they have a few possible answers. Stress and tension are migraine triggers for many patients, and they can lead to muscle spasms and severe headaches. BOTOX relaxes the injected muscle, which may help alleviate migraine pain. It may also block the transmission of nerve cells, which occur more frequently during a headache.

Thousands of migraine sufferers have reaped the benefits of using BOTOX to treat their migraines. When it is injected regularly, BOTOX may reduce the frequency and severity of migraines, which is especially helpful if you suffer from chronic migraines. BOTOX does not have many of the side effects that are common with other migraine medications, such as nausea and vomiting. The treatments may also last as long as three months.

While BOTOX has improved the lives of many migraine sufferers, it still has some disadvantages. BOTOX treatments are expensive, and they may cost as much as $550 for each treatment. Many doctors administer 31 injections into several locations around the head and neck to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. Since BOTOX is usually used for cosmetic purposes, insurance companies may not cover the injections. The injection site may turn blue or black, but the discoloration only lasts for about a week and can be easily covered up with some makeup. You may also feel some stiffness or soreness around the injection site.

Is BOTOX Right for You?

While many migraine sufferers have found relief through BOTOX, it is not suitable for everyone. If you suffer from migraines, you should visit with your doctor to decide if the injections will reduce the frequency or severity of your migraines. If you have 15 or more migraines each month, then BOTOX may work for you. However, if you have fewer migraines or suffer from a different type of headache, then BOTOX may not be an effective treatment.

It is very important to consider all of your options when you are searching for a migraine treatment. BOTOX is one of the newest treatments on the markets, and it may help you recover from your chronic migraines so that you can continue your normal lifestyle.
